The Secret Formula to Real and Lasting Happiness

Are you stuck in a rut? Do you spend Monday wishing it were Friday so you can switch off from the world? It’s time to snap out of it. You need to take responsibility for your actions. You need to accept that the position you’re in is a result of your own decisions. The sooner you do, you can begin to put in place strategies to take you from where you are to where you need to be. Done? Good. Now I’ll tell you the secret formula to real and lasting happiness.

cyclic nature of negative thinking

Progress = Happiness

Progress. It may seem simple. Or obvious. But if you consider it, how often have you found yourself working harder or longer for a promotion? How often do you tell yourself that more money will make everything easier? Sure, that is what we tell ourselves to justify working harder. I’m here to tell you, though, that money isn’t the reason. It is the intrinsic need to feel like you are moving forward, or succeeding in your efforts.

And when you get there?

Well, it’s great at first. Until you realise that it’s more work. The raise you received seemed amazing at the time, right? And now you’re back to wondering where all your money goes? You might hold a new title or be in a better financial position, but you’re back in the rut of chasing another promotion. It’s the progress that motivates us. It drives us.Happiness and progress are directly related. Both grow together

The workplace is an easy example to use as it is a shared experience, but the same is true in any aspect of our lives. The first chord you learn on guitar makes you happy, until it soon becomes commonplace. Learning to pass a ball takes you closer to your dream until the skill becomes autonomous. Been putting off reading a certain book for years? I can guarantee you’ll be happy when you finish it, and then what?

To remain happy you need to understand that finding your happiness is a journey that requires constant evaluation to stay on course.

The trap that most people fall into is in believing that work is the only place you can progress. Every aspect of your life can be improved: your relationships, your health, your income just to name a few. Mastering the journey means admitting that you will always need to work on you. It also means establishing a course of action.

Progress without direction does not exist

If you truly want to be happy, you need to set goals and implement a real and tangible action plan to achieve them. Saying ‘I want to be debt free’ isn’t enough. Wanting to ‘go on a holiday’ doesn’t cut it.

Your goals have to be specific. You have to establish the ‘why’ and attach some emotion to it, and you have to set a deadline. It could be as big as starting a new business, or as small as mowing the lawn. Size does not matter! If you don’t set specific targets to complete a task or improve your own skills, you will never find lasting happiness.

If nothing else, making progress, whether it is large or small, shows you that you can achieve. The process is cyclical. Every small step you take towards achieving your goals will develop a more successful, more positive, and happier you! After all:

Success is the key to happiness, and happiness is the key to success!
